My Name is Susie and I am an Emailaholic

Last Saturday as Peter and I flew to California for a week’s “vacation”, I promised him that I would deal with my email issues. My email issues are such that if there was an email recovery group (and maybe there is) I would have to stand up and say, “Hi, my name is Susie and I am an emailaholic.”

I actually really like email and enjoy staying in touch whether I am in the office or on the road. However, now I have had my husband, my best friend, numerous people at work and even my twin sister – who would be the last person to get upset with me – tell me that they have had enough. My girlfriend feels it is a pride issue, my sister thinks I am being inconsiderate of family, and my husband thinks I am just not able to find a good balance between work and non-work. They are probably all correct. I figure that I better start dealing with it before they all get together and plan an intervention.

Well, here is my progress report: I went almost 3 days without looking at my emails, then on the 4th and 5th I checked quickly and responded to just a few. So far so good. Today was the 6th day and I only handled one major issue but it necessitated a fair amount of emails. I am feeling the pull again so am planning to go cold turkey for the last 2 days of my vacation.

Key observation so far – skipping my emails is not the end of the world. I’m really not that important – and I am sleeping better.

Authentic Shanghai Spa Massage Experience

Nicholas and I decided to try one of the more authentic Chinese spa experiences, so we went to the recommended China Rits CEO Club. It is a 24-hour club where apparently anyone can come in and enjoy the facilities, which include a restaurant and bar, jacuzzi, steam room and lots of rooms for foot massage and body massage. There were absolutely no English speaking people there and all their literature was in Chinese. Somehow we were able to get across that we wanted to each have a foot massage and a body treatment.

I was escorted to the women’s locker area and shown to the shower, before I was given some pajama-like outfit which was what everyone else was wearing also. I ended up being taken down numerous corridors (there must have been 50 or more places for people to get foot massages and another 30 or so massage rooms) into a massage room with two massage tables. Since there was absolutely no way of communicating with my therapist I decided to just go with the flow. What ended up happening was they brought Nicholas into the room also – either they didn’t realize he was my son (step son actually) which I will take as a compliment – or perhaps they thought this is the arrangement we wanted. Anyway we laughed and decided to give it a go. Both of us ended up having a therapist work on our feet while another therapist worked on the rest of our bodies. All of this lasted a delightful 2 hours.

I figured out we had 8 hours of massage between the two of us and our final bill was $200 total. Not bad at all for us American travelers and a common price for city CEO’s in Shanghai.

Major Spa News – Miraval Living to be Announced Next Week!

launchimagecropped 798874 Major Spa News Miraval Living to be Announced Next Week!Miraval Living is getting ready to launch. I have been hearing bits and pieces regarding Miraval opening something in New York for quite some time now. The PR office for Miraval confirms that the pieces are finally coming together. Next week, there will be an “official” announcement, and I think it will cause quite a bit of buzz.

Located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan at 515 72nd Street, this high rise of residences available for purchase will redefine the notion of living the spa lifestyle. Check out their website and take a look at the renderings. In particular, I like the look of the private garden area. And the section that explains “A Week in the Life of a Resident at Miraval Living” gives a good sense of how this lifestyle translates into reality. Click “Inspired Living,” then “Miraval Moments.”

At Home at Brenner’s Park Hotel and Spa

file 723012 At Home at Brenners Park Hotel and SpaThere are some places where I just feel like saying, “I’m home.” Brenner’s Park Hotel and Spa in Baden-Baden, Germany is one of those places for me. Living here would probably be the ultimate fantasy. I have fond memories of past visits: When ISPA held their first European Spa Conference in Baden-Baden, when I visited with my twin sister Katrine, and the last few times with my husband, Peter, who fell in love with the property and the town, too. Also, I have relatives who live just 30 minutes outside of Baden-Baden in Karlsruhe. They always visit, and we are able to catch up so I can practice speaking German. The park, the town, the shopping, Friedrichsbad, the Caracalla Therme, and, of course, the historic hotel itself all add up to a magical experience. More details tomorrow…
