globalcompetitiveness Issue 5: Did you know each country has an innovation score?

Innovation: it’s just as important to countries as it is to businesses and organizations.

For countries around the world, innovation can be a central driver of economic growth, development and jobs.

Did you know each country has as an “innovation” score? The World Economic Forum’s 500+ page “Global Competitiveness Report 2011-2012” ranks 142 countries according to a variety of factors such as “Innovation and Sophistication Factors.” The “Global Innovation Index” by INSEAD (an international graduate business school and research institution) is a collaborative document exceeding 300 pages that ranks 125 countries.

Take a look at these two top 10 lists. Can we learn a thing or two from these countries? Do they also excel in health and wellness innovation? Or in hospitality innovation? Which countries are the most innovative when it comes to spa? (A point of discussion planned for the Global Spa & Wellness Summit this June in Aspen, Colorado.) It’s all up for discussion this weekend. What do you think?

Am still in Australia at the wonderful Gwinganna Health Retreat where last night’s dinner conversation turned to Aspen – someone comparing the skiing here ‘down under’ to Aspen skiing. In her words they were “different leagues” like kindergarten and graduate school.

aspen.spa 723267 Free Spa Treatments in Aspen next Weekend, August 9th and 10th.Which reminded me that next weekend I will be in Aspen for SpaFinder’s Spa Experience Weekend where anyone who comes to our white outdoor tent, set up on the ice rink, will be able to indulge in spa treatments, sample spa cuisine, and get a glimpse of some of the best spas in the world.
Hope some of you might join us…there will be quite a few SpaFinder staff including, of course, Sallie Fraenkel our COO who heads up this event and does an amazing job. It keeps getting bigger each year. Also hubby, Peter, will be riding his motorcycle into town with two of SpaFinder’s board members, having ridden cross country to stop at the big bike rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, before heading to Aspen.
aspen.dogs 755586 Free Spa Treatments in Aspen next Weekend, August 9th and 10th.As you can see, the Spa Experience is for everyone…and I do mean everyone. Last year we even had dogs being pushed in baby carriages – and no, I don’t think they were from a parade.

Spa at Gwinganna in Australia Shows Innovation in Massage, Facials and Body work – and it works

What a novel idea. Instead of creating a spa menu and then hiring therapists to perform the various massages, body scrubs and facials offered, how about hiring the practitioners first and then creating the spa menu to include unique treatments that they have created and perfected?

That’s what Sharon Kolkka, the general manager here at Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat in Queensland, Australia decided to do, and it works beautifully. I think it might be a glimpse into the future actually.

I have never seen this done so extensively before. It isn’t just a matter of offering a few unique treatments. This is a core part of their philosophy.

You would wonder then, what if a therapist leaves? Well let me tell you, they don’t have many leaving because these therapists are so happy doing what they feel called to do and doing it largely the way their healing hands and hearts work best.

The spa menu is printed in a “Kinko’s” kind of way, bound with a white spiral so that it can be reprinted quite easily when necessary. And yes there are some generic/standard offerings such as Thai massage, shiatsu, hot stones and a Hydrating Facial, however the “Specialty” section of the spa menu is extensive.

gwinganna spa 702196 Spa at Gwinganna in Australia Shows Innovation in Massage, Facials and Body work and it worksHere are some of the amazing treatments offered:

  • Music to My Muscles
  • Heavenessence
  • Soul Search
  • Sound and Stone
  • Annoint Chakratherapy

So far I had one therapist who included some chanting in her starting ritual for a Ka Huna Hawaiian massage, with beautiful oils, indigenous dance music, and a dark room with multiple candle clusters. Last evening I joined the group on the floor in the quaint old church, which they had saved from destruction and moved from somewhere in the area to the Gwinganna property. With cushions and blankets, we relaxed on the floor while the practitioner took us through a “Garden of Sound” which included a combination of vibrational music and gongs and singing bowls and drums.

I won’t easily forget these magnificent and unique experiences.

Kudos to Sharon who oversees this approach and assures that all of these specialties are done by seasoned practitioners at a “wow” level and the owner Tony de Leede, who has encouraged this novel direction.

Gwinganna Spa Lifestyle Retreat has Got it Right

Am here in Australia at Gwinganna - a new spa (where Hugh Jackman and many others go). It opened less than two years ago and seems to be a smashing success. After just a few days here, I can see why.
More about that later however, I thought one aspect of their program is totally unique and brilliant:
To help guests be “mindful” and stay in the moment, they do not give schedules. I have no idea what I will be doing today except that in 30 minutes I will be showing up for wake-up tai chi. Then the rest of the day unfolds. It sure is a good feeling to simply flow along and not try to control everything. They have a list of whatever a guest requests for spa treatments, etc. And you just can trust that they will get it done right. Lots of repeat clientele are already proving that the program is extremely popular.

Spa Gossip – A Source of Juicy Nuggets of Wisdom

Spa Gossip – A Source of Juicy Nuggets of Wisdom

By Susie Ellis, the SpaFinder Insider
One fun element of spending time at a spa where you interact with other guests (especially at destination spas – my favorite kind of spa) is that you learn some interesting tidbits from others.
Between conversations on a hike or chatting with someone at a meal, I get a glimpse into other people’s lives which are often quite different from my own.

I recently spent the day at Rancho la Puerta and here is a sample of the nuggets I learned….

1. I met one lady on the last part of my three-mile hike who told me about her flower and plant business. She is a horticulturist and sells seeds to nurserys all around the world.

I asked her my favorite question…”What trends are you seeing in your business?” Of course, I have no idea if there even are trends in plants and flowers. Can flowers be “in” or “out”? Well, apparently yes!

She shared with me, for example, that when the economy is bad, flower and plant purchases go up. Seems that people are not traveling as much and not buying homes, so they are fixing up the place where they live. Also, in a down economy, the trend in flowers is color, color, color. Apparently when people are depressed, colors add vibrancy to life so fashion and plants follow that trend.

She also taught me that if you want your garden to be seen at night, you have to plant white flowers. They are the only color visible in the dark. Another strong trend she is seeing currently is toward planting things that do not take as much water and are more eco-friendly.

poinsettias 708503 Spa Gossip A Source of Juicy Nuggets of WisdomAnd finally before the hike was over she told me that Costco changed everything about poinsettias. They were always such a special and popular gift at holiday time, but when Costco started selling them for such low prices, “the gig was up.” Now people know they are inexpensive – in fact cheap, so bringing someone a poinsettia doesn’t count unless you brings lots of them!

The hike ended too soon…I was having a lot of fun learning about her world!

mascara brush 727793 Spa Gossip A Source of Juicy Nuggets of Wisdom2. Another tidbit I learned (this was something I overheard two other people discussing) was a clever way to quickly cover gray hair regrowth in between trips to the salon. Mascara! The woman explained how she just uses her brown mascara brush and fills in around her hairline. Haven’t tried it yet…but sounds like a good idea for a quick fix.

3. And then at dinner, we had a lively conversation with a group of people about the new buzzword “staycation.” I’ve already blogged about it (basically it is taking a vacation while staying home or going on a vacation very close to home.) Anyway, one of the guests from the west coast said she is now hearing the term “daycations.” I guess that is taking a vacation for a day. Am I to assume now that one can take a daycation-staycation? Or a staycation-daycation? Oh dear.

I could go on and on, as could anyone who has been at a spa where there is interaction…but was just thinking about how it is really no small thing to connect with people at spas. It truly enriches the experience.
