A Helpful Explanation of the 2007 ISPA Spa Industry Study in Regards to “Male Visits on Average” and the “Number of Men going to Spas”
by Susie Ellis

Received this email from Debra Locker at ISPA today. She helped clarify the question I had in my recent blog about what “male visits on average” meant in the recently released ISPA study and how that compares to the percentage of men going to spas. She wrote such a good explanation – with a helpful example – that I thought it would be best for me to share her response with you rather than try and put it into my own words.

In my mind….the additional thing I have now learned from looking at these two different numbers is that men do not use a spa as often as women. (which intuitively makes sense) And there is probably some way to figure out what that ratio is…however I will leave that up to the researchers to figure out!

Thanks Debra.
Susie

Here is the communication:

Hello Susie – we hope you are enjoying a lovely holiday season!

Thanks for your comprehensive coverage of ISPA’s 2007 Spa Industry Study on your blog. We wanted to clarify one of the questions you raised from your posting on Nov. 23 regarding the number of male patrons and visits.

“Male visits on average” is not the same as the number of male spa-goers. ISPA measures both visits and number of male vs. female spa-goers as two different ways to look at genders and their behaviors.

-The ISPA 2007 Spa Industry Study asks industry professionals the percentage of visits received in their spa by male guests. The percentage of male visits reported in the ISPA 2007 Spa Industry Study do not equal people, though equals the number of visits male guests make to a spa.

-The ISPA 2006 Spa-goer Study, which is a survey of consumers, reported that 31% of U.S. spa-goers and 29% of Canadian spa-goers were male. These figures represent the actual number of people and not visits.

For a practical example, your husband Pete may visit a spa 10 times in a year and my husband Ron may visit twice. They’d have a combined 12 visits, but we would only count them as two males. Their combined visits (12) would be measured as a percentage in the ISPA 2007 Spa Industry Study and the actual number of men (2) would be counted in the ISPA 2006 Spa-goer Study.

I hope that helps clarify your question about the percentage of male spa-goers and their visits. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with additional questions.

Once again, thank you for your coverage of the 2007 Industry Study, as well as the recent ISPA Conference & Expo, on your blog. Best, Debra

Spa Soiree

healthygourmet color 000 753530 Spa SoireeDespite rain and mud the Spa Soiree held at Glenda and Jerry Greenwald’s home the night before the Aspen Spa Day event was a lot of fun. Sallie Fraenkel, our COO, arranged a unique event twist for attendees to receive beautiful robes and slippers upon entry that they could wear for the evening. However, there was some hesitation about whether or not this would work with the sophisticated Aspen crowd who generally don the most amazing and expensive apparel to look “Aspen Casual” along with their huge baubles.

robes 797111 Spa SoireeI will give the crowd credit for having a great sense of fun when they were willing to brave rain to drive up the windy road to the Greenwald’s mansion and take off their shoes to put on slippers. Thankfully the slippers were not the furry kind but plastic which in many cases saved $1,000 pair of shoes from the mud. Some also put on their robes. It probably helped that these Fernando Sanchez robes retail for $450 each and were drop dead gorgeous! There was spa food prepared by five of the world’s top spa chefs and mini spa treatments people could sample. Mandarin Oriental New York, Montage Resort and Spa, Pritikin Longevity Center and Spa , Ojai Valley Inn and Spa , and Chiva Som in Thailand flew in their chefs for the event.
We all learned a few things. One is that if you put your pedicured toes in mud for a few hours, the polish will chip. Second, it was once again verified that Aspenites like to party but expect your party to end on the early side, they like to get up early to hike, bike, and do their yoga. Looking so fabulous does take a lot of work!

Harry Potter at the Spa

Right before I left for Rancho La Puerta last week, it was Harry Potter mania around here. The Barnes & Noble near my office had a line around the block with people (many in costume) waiting to get the first copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. As I generally do, I wondered if the headlines would relate to spa in any way and wondered if there would be people at “the Ranch” reading the Harry Potter book.

IMG 1181 765025 Harry Potter at the SpaWell, indeed there was a smattering of folks around the pool with their noses in the Potter book. My favorite encounter was with Marty and his daughter Isabel pictured here who each had a copy of the book. He was reading the British version and she was reading the American version. They had enjoyed all of the previous books together beginning with the ones he read to her when she was a child.

But it was Meredith Viera’s interview on the Today Show with the book’s author J.K Rowling and their discussion about the final three words at the end of the book which I found most fascinating and really tied the Harry Potter series and spa together for me.

Indeed, those precious three words were the same ones that moved me so during my visit to the Farm at San Benito in the Philippines. Every spa treatment begins with the three words that ended Harry Potter: “All is well.”

Grail Springs Spa – next on our spa tour

The view at Grail Springs is the first thing that captured our attention. They are right on a lake which, when we visited, glistened in the sun although covered with ice and snow. They have made good use of that view from their great room, the dining room and from many of the bedrooms.

Stacey and I met with Madeline, the owner, who was kind enough to stay longer than planned because we did get a tad delayed in our drive. I love love love meeting the owners of spas because then I can understand the core philosophy and meeting Madeline was no exception. She is a very attractive woman with a great senses of style which was obvious from the outfit she wore. A real country look yet with the most contemporary bubbled hemline. I wasn’t surprised when she told us later that she was a designer.

She had just returned from New York where, among other things, she had done an interview for MSNBC on “The Secret”. (That’s the book so many people are talking about since Oprah had the Australian author on her TV show.) It’s become a controversial book with people lined up in support and in opposition. Madeline is “pro” as she leads “The Secret” retreats at Grail Springs.

What I learned about Grail Springs is how focused they are on detox. The food, the treatments, the reading materials – detox is a real foundation. They have the new infrared hot house dome which can cover various body parts for a really focused infrared therapy. They also have the detox foot baths which I am beginning to see at more spas. And they have colonic therapy.

More about that later.

Spa Survey from Cornell

logo100 737014 Spa Survey from CornellWe received a call at the beginning of the fall semester from several Cornell students who are in Professor Mary Tabacchi’s Spa Management class requesting our help for a class project.

They have designed two short surveys – one for spa managers and one for spa consumers – and asked us to help distribute them so that they can get as many responses as possible. For those of you who don’t know, Cornell has one of the most prestigious hospitality programs in the world. The university was also the first to offer spa management classes. Many graduates are now in top spa positions all over the world. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey for the students.

If you are a spa industry manager or owner, please take this survey.

If you are a spa consumer, please take this survey.
