Why the Spa Industry is Partially at Fault for Fewer Men Enjoying Massages, Facials and Other Spa Treatments

by Susie Ellis

The spa industry has attracted more women than men here in the U.S. ever since I can remember. When I started in the industry in 1975, although there weren’t statistics, my guess is that the ratio of women to men was likely 95% to 5%. The industry figure is currently 70% to 30% although if broken down by resort/hotel versus day spas, there are more men at resorts/hotels (approximately 60% to 40%) than at day spas (approximately 80% to 20%).

In my opinion, part of the reason we haven’t reached 50%/50% yet is our own fault.

Here is why – illustrated by some recent spa visits.

Peter and I visited the beautiful new spa in Bedford Springs, PA. As we were driving home, we compared notes. I loved the spacious locker room and beautifully tiled wet area…the experience showers, the steam room, soaking pool, cool plunge mineral pool, etc. Peter said “What do you mean spacious?” The men’s room was so crowded I couldn’t undress without knocking into someone and I didn’t even bother getting into the Jacuzzi.” We discovered that the men’s area was much, much smaller than the women’s. And this is a brand new spa!

Also on our way home, we stopped to see the Hershey Spa, also in PA. During our tour we were told that because they have a great deal of female business, they had just turned their men’s locker room (which was smaller to begin with) into a second women’s locker room and relocated the men into an even smaller facility down the hall. Peter was so disappointed – on top of the “downgrade,” the men’s steam room was out of order too.

Rancho La Puerta in Mexico is another example. Amazing facilities for women….and a very small and much older facility for men. Even though Rancho La Puerta is a fabulous place for men (my husband loves it), I am sure men are continually reminded that the welcome mat seems favor the women.

Fortunately, there are examples of spas which have given men and women equal facilities. One is the new Lodge at Woodloch in Hawley, PA. If this were standard for the future, my prediction is that we would get to a 50/50 ratio of men to women spa-goers much sooner.

Evian Spa in Shanghai gets an A+ for Design

evianshanghai 798566 Evian Spa in Shanghai gets an A+ for DesignA visit to the Evian Spa at Three on the Bund was on my list of “must do’s” while I was in Shanghai. Not only did its opening several years ago cause quite a splash, but Alexa Brue reviewed it in the May/June issue of Luxury Spa Finder Magazine, giving it a mixed review which meant I wasn’t planning on dropping off any magazines during my visit.

Alexa had found that her facial was much better than the one her friend received, and that of course means an uneven experience. She did give the spa raves for decor.

I had the concierge at my hotel call to make the appointment so they didn’t know who I was when I visited. I had also decided to have a facial. Happily my experience was positive for both the treatment and the decor. The facial was terrific (they use Clarins) and the aesthetician very nurturing – and yes, I did get a foot and hand massage as well. My only complaint was that the facial was given on a massage table where I was lying flat on my back with no pillow under my legs and no elevation for my torso. I’m OK in that position but I know it could be uncomfortable for many. It is interesting that they would miss such an important detail so easy to correct.

I learned that there are now three Evian Spas, one in France, this one in Shanghai, and one which just opened in Argentina.

The decor really does work – simple, mesmerizing, lots of white curtains, acrylic chairs, white lockers, candle light, white relaxation chairs with white comforters, white flowers, each treatment room wall with a unique texture and design. Mine had dramatic black and white marble (think cow) floor to ceiling. This spa’s decor is an example of such creative, dramatic yet simple design, taking in the space is a large part of the experience. It just works so well that it trumps any small hiccups in the service.

Luxury and Vision from Baden-Baden, Germany

brennerspool1 795684 Luxury and Vision from Baden Baden, GermanyEven if you have never been to Brenner’s Park Hotel and Spa in Baden-Baden, Germany, you may have seen this famous photo of their pool, which overlooks a glorious park. We were lucky enough to be there on a crisp sunny fall day where the leaves were turning, and I had to wear a scarf for the first time this season. Staying at Brenner’s is what I imagine life would have been like decades ago if one was European royalty. A stately mansion with talented and friendly servants, outstanding food, a “great room” for tea and conversation, and all of this overlooking the park, where “fuzgenger” (people who are walking) spend their afternoons. And should one ever want to venture out, there is a delightful cobblestoned area of Baden-Baden for world-class shopping.

For spa lovers, there is the spa at Brenner’s. The hotel even has a spa suite with a butler where a couple (or group) can enjoy treatments as well as their own sauna, steam, and whirlpool. Every kind of spa and beauty treatment is available as well as fitness (which is still a bit rare in Europe, although thankfully I am seeing better gyms in hotels nowadays). A short walk away is the famous, 120-year-old Friedrichsbad, where you go through a circuit of water/heat treatments – and yes, totally naked in a mixed-gender crowd. Or for a more modern water bathing experience, the Caracalla Therme has myriad indoor and outdoor pools, and only the sauna area is “no clothing” (not optional).

The greatest treat for me, however, was not all of these luxuries (although we did enjoy them immensely!) but spending some time with Herr Richard Schmitz, who was kind enough to make time for us during our visit. Herr Schmitz is the well-known former managing director of Brenner’s who shepherded this grand hotel for the past 30 years. He reminisced about the genesis of the word “spa” in Europe – since he is the one who decided to add it to the name Brenner’s Park many years ago. His was, in fact, the first European hotel to use the term spa. And notably, he is now working with a small group of dedicated spa-industry enthusiasts to launch the Harvard of spa education in Baden-Baden: a “Spa Academy” that will train management and practitioners from around the world.

Spa past, present, and future. My favorite conversation.

Husband at Spa (Spa, Belgium that is)

piscineexterieur2 735685 Husband at Spa (Spa, Belgium that is)Just got this email from hubby who is in Brussels for a global internet conference. I reminded him that he was close to the city of Spa and that it might be worth a drive to see it. He found out it was only 90 minutes away, so off he went. Here is his email to me from Spa, Belgium:

“There are many places here with thermes but they are really mineral pools at a property…terme is spa kind of like Italy. I got lucky …took a tram from center town for about 100 yards up a hill to the real spa in town. Termes de Spa is the name…no hotel as you stay in hotels around the town…Friedrichbad in Baden-Baden comes close except much of the facility is pretty new…especially the treatment areas…nice wood floors and cabins as they call ‘em…with views of the surrounding tree-lined countryside. Many pools, whirlpools, high-pressure fountains like fire hoses…they do have steam and saunas and there is one section for au naturel and another for swimsuits. Full-service spa with many treatments, including beauty. Big here are these copper bath tubs with warm natural gas or carbonated water…as you sit in the tub you look out at nature….all the pools reminded me of Fonteverde…oh…they also do Watsu but I could not book a time. Hot place worth a visit.”
