A couple of nights ago it was our privilege to hand Dr. Andrew Weil SpaFinder’s 2009 Visionary Award. Our Visionary Award goes to one person each year who has made a huge contribution to the field of spa and wellness. (Previous recipients include Dr. Deepak Chopra, Dr. Howard Murad, Mel and Enid Zuckerman, Dr. Bruce Katz, Dr. Stephen, and Lyn Krant and last year’s recipient, Deborah Szekely.)

Simmone, Dulcy, and I gave Dr. Weil his award (see the great photo of the two of them with Dr. Weil and the not-so-great photo of Dr. Weil and me) for his tireless efforts to bridge th Dr. Andrew Weil and Spas: SpaFinder Visionary Award Winnere worlds of medicine and spa, and his prediction decades ago, that the hospital of the future would look more like a spa. Dr. Weil’s background includes being a Harvard Medical School-trained doctor, becoming a pioneer in integrative medicine, writing 12 books (mostly best sellers) and working with spas – notably Canyon Ranch and now Miraval.

And …talk about timing.

Dr. Weil (who has a way of simplifying things into understandable nuggets) spoke to the 92nd Street Y audience here in New York City and introduced his new book, “Why Our Health Matters….a Vision of Medicine that can Transform Our Future.” Given that the U.S. is on the eve of health care reform and other countries are also struggling with how to contain their health care costs, I think it was fascinating to hear what Dr. Weil had to say in that regard – and what all this means for the spa and wellness industry. Last night Dr. Weil was on Larry King Live. Check out the link to hear the actual 18-minute segment.

Spa Headwinds, Spa Tailwinds….Which are Strongest?

wind.turbine 753099 Spa Headwinds, Spa Tailwinds....Which are Strongest?Spa Headwinds, Spa Tailwinds….Which are Strongest?
by Susie Ellis

Day two of the American Lodging and Investment Summit (ALIS) here at the Hyatt Century Plaza in LA. There are great speakers and mostly business topics – economics, research numbers, forecasts, etc. I found the following comparison a good way to summarize what I have been hearing here.

Headwinds for the U.S. (things slowing us down)

1. Credit crunch
2. High oil prices
3. Fear of recession
4. Increasing deficit
5. U.S. housing in trouble
6. Weaker dollar

Tailwinds (things giving us momentum)

1. Rapid expansion of new travelers from China, India, Russia, Middle East
2. Improved monetary policy and a faster reaction from governments to avoid major crisis (today’s rate cut by the federal reserve is a perfect illustration I think)
3. U.S. has strong corporate profits
4. Consumer spending is still strong

Bottom line is:

Most of the pessimism is in the U.S. and not in other countries. Researchers are predicting continued global growth – however slower than originally expected.

While most of the conversation is about hotels and resorts in general, I think it is safe to say that these forecasts can easily apply in the spa industry as well.

Fertility Tranquility: Pregnant with Possibilities for Spas

Fertility Tranquility: Pregnant with Possibilities for Spas
by Susie Ellis

Our team spent quite some time researching the “Fertility Tranquility” trend – or as some call it, the “Procreation Vacation” trend. This was mailed to those who have signed up for the monthly SpaFinder Insider. In case you missed it, I thought you might enjoy reading about it here. Some really interesting and fun stuff….(And if you want to sign up to receive future SpaFinder Insiders…just click here)

Dear SpaFinder Insiders,
Each year SpaFinder announces ten top spa trends we predict will be “hot” for the New Year. Our list for 2008 marks our fifth year of predictions and if you go back to the previous lists, you will see that we have had a pretty good track record.

Based on initial reactions to this year’s top ten list, it appears that the Fertility Tranquility trend has sparked quite a bit of interest. Therefore, I selected this trend to cover in January’s SpaFinder Insider. (The link between spas and fertility is fascinating – and goes back a long way – especially pertaining to water.)

As always, I welcome your comments, questions, and this month in particular, your Fertility Tranquility stories which I am happy to share with others. Just go to asksusie@spafinder.com.

Spa China

spachina cover 747603 Spa ChinaA colleague just brought to my attention a magazine called Spa China. Since I had not seen it before, I thought it was new but found out it is actually about two years old. Naturally, it is now on my subscription list.

The timing is great, because these days I hear more and more people talking about China and how this highly populated country will affect all of us in the years to come. Haven’t given too much thought yet to how the spa industry is likely to develop in China, but I am hearing a few things from fellow industry professionals who have begun doing spa-related business there. Three points in particular stand out:

1) The Chinese see a spa as having a hot mineral spring and a sauna facility.
2) Male guests outnumber female guests at the moment.
3) The growth of the spa industry in China is still in its early stages.

If you are interested in keeping up with this growth, seems like Spa China Magazine would be a good resource. (Did I mention it is bilingual?)
