The Olympic Closing Ceremonies Raise Thoughts on China’s Growing Spa Industry

The Olympic’s Closing Ceremony Raise Thoughts on China’s Growing Spa Industry
By Susie Ellis, SpaFinder Insider

The blog post I wrote for today about my weekend at Winvian will have to wait and be posted tomorrow. It seems quite unimportant now as I think about the conclusion of the summer Olympics in China which came to a crescendo with last evening’s closing ceremony.

China has to be congratulated for the superb display of pageantry and its success in the sporting world. 100 medals and 51 of them gold compared to 110 medals for the U.S. split almost evenly between gold, silver and bronze. As Thomas Friedman wrote in his NY Times editorial on Saturday – the U.S. can learn something from the focus and determination of the Chinese and the Chinese can learn something from the U.S. about the success that comes from diversity. I can’t help but wonder if the spa industry in China will develop along these same strengths.

I remember my first time in China – it was 1979 and all the people were still wearing blue Mao mao suit 718703 The Olympic Closing Ceremonies Raise Thoughts on Chinas Growing Spa Industrysuits. There were bicycle riders everywhere, food markets with strange foods and odd smells, and I found the entire experience a bit frightening. There was no feeling of openness or freedom at all – an unscheduled walk which was not-on-the-tour’s agenda resulted in authorities intervening. What a contrast to last year when I went to Shanghai to speak at the Turning Point Spa Conference. I found a vibrant city with stylish young people and a lot of smiles. I can only imagine how the pride of these successful Olympics will accelerate the change in China even more.
People worry about openness and freedom in China. I am no longer as concerned having seen the changes in the past twenty five years. And now, the Internet is there to help. I had heard a lot about Internet censorship before my trip to last year’s spa conference (my topic was Marketing Spas on the Internet) but found I was able to navigate through my entire online presentation with one exception – http://www.secondlife.com/. This website, which I pointed to as a glimpse into the future, was censored likely because of some of the unsuitable content that finds its way there. I understand pornography is censored on the Internet in China (which I don’t consider such a bad idea) and while negative commentary about the government seems to be “monitored,” I understand that this is becoming more and more difficult to control.

I don’t think any of us can imagine the potential for growth of the spa industry in China. And after these Olympics, I am inclined to think it is going to be very exciting.

Free Spa Treatments in Aspen next Weekend, August 9th and 10th.

Am still in Australia at the wonderful Gwinganna Health Retreat where last night’s dinner conversation turned to Aspen – someone comparing the skiing here ‘down under’ to Aspen skiing. In her words they were “different leagues” like kindergarten and graduate school.

aspen.spa 723267 Free Spa Treatments in Aspen next Weekend, August 9th and 10th.Which reminded me that next weekend I will be in Aspen for SpaFinder’s Spa Experience Weekend where anyone who comes to our white outdoor tent, set up on the ice rink, will be able to indulge in spa treatments, sample spa cuisine, and get a glimpse of some of the best spas in the world.
Hope some of you might join us…there will be quite a few SpaFinder staff including, of course, Sallie Fraenkel our COO who heads up this event and does an amazing job. It keeps getting bigger each year. Also hubby, Peter, will be riding his motorcycle into town with two of SpaFinder’s board members, having ridden cross country to stop at the big bike rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, before heading to Aspen.

Spa at Gwinganna in Australia Shows Innovation in Massage, Facials and Body work – and it works

What a novel idea. Instead of creating a spa menu and then hiring therapists to perform the various massages, body scrubs and facials offered, how about hiring the practitioners first and then creating the spa menu to include unique treatments that they have created and perfected?

That’s what Sharon Kolkka, the general manager here at Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat in Queensland, Australia decided to do, and it works beautifully. I think it might be a glimpse into the future actually.

I have never seen this done so extensively before. It isn’t just a matter of offering a few unique treatments. This is a core part of their philosophy.

You would wonder then, what if a therapist leaves? Well let me tell you, they don’t have many leaving because these therapists are so happy doing what they feel called to do and doing it largely the way their healing hands and hearts work best.

The spa menu is printed in a “Kinko’s” kind of way, bound with a white spiral so that it can be reprinted quite easily when necessary. And yes there are some generic/standard offerings such as Thai massage, shiatsu, hot stones and a Hydrating Facial, however the “Specialty” section of the spa menu is extensive.

gwinganna spa 702196 Spa at Gwinganna in Australia Shows Innovation in Massage, Facials and Body work and it worksHere are some of the amazing treatments offered:

  • Music to My Muscles
  • Heavenessence
  • Soul Search
  • Sound and Stone
  • Annoint Chakratherapy

So far I had one therapist who included some chanting in her starting ritual for a Ka Huna Hawaiian massage, with beautiful oils, indigenous dance music, and a dark room with multiple candle clusters. Last evening I joined the group on the floor in the quaint old church, which they had saved from destruction and moved from somewhere in the area to the Gwinganna property. With cushions and blankets, we relaxed on the floor while the practitioner took us through a “Garden of Sound” which included a combination of vibrational music and gongs and singing bowls and drums.

I won’t easily forget these magnificent and unique experiences.

Kudos to Sharon who oversees this approach and assures that all of these specialties are done by seasoned practitioners at a “wow” level and the owner Tony de Leede, who has encouraged this novel direction.

Gwinganna Spa Lifestyle Retreat has Got it Right

Am here in Australia at Gwinganna - a new spa (where Hugh Jackman and many others go). It opened less than two years ago and seems to be a smashing success. After just a few days here, I can see why.
More about that later however, I thought one aspect of their program is totally unique and brilliant:
To help guests be “mindful” and stay in the moment, they do not give schedules. I have no idea what I will be doing today except that in 30 minutes I will be showing up for wake-up tai chi. Then the rest of the day unfolds. It sure is a good feeling to simply flow along and not try to control everything. They have a list of whatever a guest requests for spa treatments, etc. And you just can trust that they will get it done right. Lots of repeat clientele are already proving that the program is extremely popular.

Global Spa Summit 2008: Ian Schrager Addresses Spa Design (or Rather, The Lack Of…)

Global Spa Summit 2008: Ian Schrager Addresses Spa Design (or Rather, The Lack Of…)

At the 2008 Global Spa Summit, Ian Schrager, who was the keynote speaker for Day One , gave a very inspirational talk. Looking somewhat “hip” himself (although in my opinion a tad older than the age (61) I had read about in a recent article), he began his remarks in a husky voice. I almost got up to get him a glass of water until I realized – that is his regular voice. Maybe that’s a result of a lot of inhaled smoke from his first brainchild – Studio 54 back in the 80′s. (And yes, since I actually was allowed past the velvet ropes into Studio 54 once back then, I can vouch for the fact that there was plenty of smoke – and all kinds of smoking if you know what I mean.)

Anyway…back to the essense of his remarks which were so inspiring. Here are the five things he said which I remember most clearly:

1. The spa industry needs a lot more creativity…we have started recyclying the same old ideas over and over and we are not coming up with anything new.

2. Looking at other spas for inspiration for new spa design is a bad idea. Rather look outside of the spa industry. See what is happening in fashion for example, or maybe in yacht design, or hip restaurants, etc.

3. Don’t rely on focus groups or asking others for ideas when it comes to innovation…people cannot articulate something they haven’t seen. Rather, rely on your gut – something you want to see that is brand new.

4. Creativity in decor has nothing to do with the color of the carpet. It has everything to do with a new idea that sparks enthusiasm and catches on.

5. Much of his “secret” was how he tapped into people’s natural (and strong) desire to relate to each other. Social, social, social…..that’s where some “nuggets” of creativity will likely lie for spas of the future.

He showed slides of his various creations – all mesmerizing in their creativity and “thinking outside the box.” (It is worth looking at the slides viewable on the Internet.) What really impressed me about Ian’s talk is that every single person I spoke with thought it was terrific. And every slide he showed was of an unusual concept that was universally popular. That is genius.

Post Summit…one of the spa-tours we recommended was having a drink at the Gramercy Park Hotel (right around the corner from SpaFinder). A great finish to a remarkable experience with Ian Schrager himself.

Oh…I should mention…his latest collaboration is a venture with Marriott where a new brand will incorporate Ian Schrager designs in the rooms of about 100 boutique hotels. Although there were questions about how this could possibly work, after seeing what he has done in the past – I have no doubt it will work beautifully!

“I am still passionate about continuing to rethink things and shake things up.
Coming up with breakthrough concepts and going off into unchartered territory.”
Ian Schrager
