Attention all dentists….we would love a spa service while you are drilling!

The day after Christmas, I received an unwelcome surprise — a toothache resulting in my first root canal. It was a three-hour ordeal (not fun, although thankfully not too painful), and all the while I was thinking about my favorite dental spa experience, which occurred a while ago at Dell’Acqua Dental Studio in Palm Desert. That’s the place I wrote about in my Ask Susie column in the Jan/Feb 2007 issue of Luxury SpaFinder Magazine.

After trying a variety of dental spas, I concluded that Dr. Renee at the Dell’Acqua Dental Studio has done the most to incorporate a spa ambiance and nurturing spa services into the dental experience. Unfortunately, the endodontist I was sent to hasn’t gotten with the spa program yet. While I was undergoing my root canal, I kept thinking: “This would be so much easier with a foot massage.”

In case you haven’t seen our latest issue, I will share with you what I wrote in my column. Please pass it on to your dentist, and let’s see if we can’t get more of our dentists (and endodontists) to offset their patients’ stress with relaxation treatments.

WHAT I LOVED:

Being given a robe and slippers to change into. Andrea Bocelli on the sound system, flower petals at my feet, a warm aromatherapy towel around my shoulders, and an eye pillow on my lids during the dental exam and teeth whitening session. The way therapist Sam Nguyen expertly massaged my forearms and hands, placed them in warm mitts, and then performed a reflexology massage on my lower legs and feet during the dental procedure. (And at no charge — it’s all included in the fee.)

WHAT’S UNIQUE:
This isn’t a dental spa; it’s spa dentistry, a field in which Rene Del’Acqua, D.D.S., was a pioneer. The spa amenities, setting, and services (and the oxygen inhalation offered throughout my 90-minute treatment) left me as relaxed and rejuvenated as a regular spa visit–but this one included dental work.

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE:
Not having quite enough moisturizer on my hands during the hot mitt treatment.

MAKE SURE YOU:
Book one of the newly decorated spa suites. Request Kelly Rambold for tooth bleaching. Her attentiveness makes me proud of the way spa practices have enhanced the practice of dentistry.

Some Spa Insider Thoughts

Other highlights of my trip to the Caribbean Spa and Wellness Conference:

  • Spending time with Nime La Fauci, our account rep for the Caribbean, and finding out that she can really make friends on the phone. Everywhere we went, people just couldn’t wait to meet her – and embraced her like a long-lost friend – despite never having met her before!
  • Reconnecting with Tiffany, who used to be my late-night-at-the-office buddy.

  • Getting a tour of Secrets Excellence and Sunscape in Punta Cana from the impressive spa director Juan Monitijo and hearing his enthusiasm for the new couples’ treatment room they are developing, which sounded truly unique in its inclusion of a couples’ Vichy shower and a couples’ hydrotherapy tub. This is an especially good idea for properties that are “adults-only resorts,” where almost all guests are couples. He saw a need and is filling it!
  • Spending some time with Andrew Barnard, who manages the very popular Body Holiday at LeSPORT on the island of St. Lucia (and is developing additional resorts – sevmap 730408 Some Spa Insider Thoughtseral with a real estate component). We had a fascinating conversation one evening in which I found out that he participates in an extreme-sports events called the 4 Deserts. It is a series of seven-day foot races, each covering 250 kilometers, across the world’s largest and most forbidding deserts, including the Gobi in China, the Atacama in Chile, the Sahara in Egypt, and Antarctica. Andrew has already completed three of these races and is now training for the final one – Antarctica. It makes the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii look like a race for weenies.

Luxury and Vision from Baden-Baden, Germany

brennerspool1 795684 Luxury and Vision from Baden Baden, GermanyEven if you have never been to Brenner’s Park Hotel and Spa in Baden-Baden, Germany, you may have seen this famous photo of their pool, which overlooks a glorious park. We were lucky enough to be there on a crisp sunny fall day where the leaves were turning, and I had to wear a scarf for the first time this season. Staying at Brenner’s is what I imagine life would have been like decades ago if one was European royalty. A stately mansion with talented and friendly servants, outstanding food, a “great room” for tea and conversation, and all of this overlooking the park, where “fuzgenger” (people who are walking) spend their afternoons. And should one ever want to venture out, there is a delightful cobblestoned area of Baden-Baden for world-class shopping.

For spa lovers, there is the spa at Brenner’s. The hotel even has a spa suite with a butler where a couple (or group) can enjoy treatments as well as their own sauna, steam, and whirlpool. Every kind of spa and beauty treatment is available as well as fitness (which is still a bit rare in Europe, although thankfully I am seeing better gyms in hotels nowadays). A short walk away is the famous, 120-year-old Friedrichsbad, where you go through a circuit of water/heat treatments – and yes, totally naked in a mixed-gender crowd. Or for a more modern water bathing experience, the Caracalla Therme has myriad indoor and outdoor pools, and only the sauna area is “no clothing” (not optional).

The greatest treat for me, however, was not all of these luxuries (although we did enjoy them immensely!) but spending some time with Herr Richard Schmitz, who was kind enough to make time for us during our visit. Herr Schmitz is the well-known former managing director of Brenner’s who shepherded this grand hotel for the past 30 years. He reminisced about the genesis of the word “spa” in Europe – since he is the one who decided to add it to the name Brenner’s Park many years ago. His was, in fact, the first European hotel to use the term spa. And notably, he is now working with a small group of dedicated spa-industry enthusiasts to launch the Harvard of spa education in Baden-Baden: a “Spa Academy” that will train management and practitioners from around the world.

Spa past, present, and future. My favorite conversation.

Beginnings

carolinagateAll 753098 BeginningsDeborah Szekely has been a mentor of mine for many years. She hired me at the Golden Door in 1975 when I was just out of college. Then, the Golden Door was still “the old Golden Door,” meaning that the beautiful “Japanese inn” facility for which the Door is now famous had not yet opened. At that time, the Golden Door was still located in its original home right off of Highway 395. It was configured like a motel, with rooms around the pool (which were fabulous). All the women guests wore “pinkies” and had oil put in their hair for the entire week! I remember the first day I walked into the setting and saw the lush vegetation and fragrance of the gardens, the birds singing, and the happy atmosphere shared by staff and guests alike. Little did I know that my entire career in the spa industry had started that very day.

A Much Better Encounter with Peter Greenberg

GreenbergPeter 722453 A Much Better Encounter with Peter GreenbergMost people know Peter Greenberg from NBC, where he has been the Today Show’s travel editor for many years. He is also a best selling author – Travel Detective is one of my favorites. I was introduced to Peter several years ago by my friend Kim Marshall, who is involved in the spa PR world and is also a friend of Peter’s. I must say, I believe we got off to a bad start and it was really my fault. We met at an industry trade show, and after Kim introduced us we spoke briefly about travel and spa. Noting that Peter was somewhat overweight, I couldn’t help but suggest that a full-week stay at a weight loss spa such as the Golden Door or Cal-a-Vie might be a good idea. Well, that turned out to be a big blunder, as the look on his face–and the fact that our conversation came to an abrupt halt–told me that I had hit a nerve. There went any hope of his mentioning Spa Finder on the Today Show!

Well, I am happy to report that I ran into Peter again–this time at the Virtuoso Travel event in Cambodia–with much better results. I almost didn’t recognize him as he has lost a great deal of weight and looked very fit! He enthusiastically shared with me that he has lost 35 lbs (while still traveling extensively) and is coming out with a new book in May called The Traveler’s Diet. What a great idea for a book! I can’t wait to see what weight loss tips he has for travelers. I wonder if they will include forgiving rude people who bring up someone’s need to lose weight? icon smile A Much Better Encounter with Peter Greenberg
