Cal-a-Vie Spa Guests’ Refrain, “Lucky Me”

calaviecountry 300x190 Cal a Vie Spa Guests Refrain, Lucky MeIt’s a rare phenomenon. If you have experienced it, you don’t soon forget it.  It’s like putting a dollar into the candy machine and getting two dollars worth of candy out – every time. The point is you get much more than you pay for and you can’t help but be a bit giddy. It’s a real ‘lucky me’ feeling.

Well, after Peter and I visited the exquisite destination spa, Cal-a-Vie, in southern California last week, we think there is now a spa where one can experience this phenomenon. It is truly to the benefit of guests who come to Cal-a-Vie that Terri and John Havens, who purchased the property about 10 years ago, have poured their heart, soul and a fortune into creating a very magical place with unparalleled facilities and programming.

Peter and I had a chance to visit Cal-a-Vie on Thanksgiving Day because we were on our way to Peter’s mom’s (she lives nearby) to celebrate the holiday. I hadn’t been to Cal-a-Vie in so many years that I was really excited to see all of the changes I had been hearing about. It was also fortunate for us that Terri and John were in-residence which enabled us to see the property through their eyes.  We had a chance to learn about the background of so many of the improvements as well as get a glimpse of their plans for its future.

What began as a refurbishment and upgrading of their 26 guest rooms with Terri adding some special antique furniture and furnishings grew to become a huge creative work of art that both Terry and John seem to really enjoy doing together.  While raising their three young children, they have also been growing and improving what was already a pretty wonderful destination spa.  Along the way they added red clay tennis courts, a labyrinth, and turned the former fitness center into a gorgeous avant garde boutique; they spent millions building what must be the most beautiful gym calaviegym1 Cal a Vie Spa Guests Refrain, Lucky Mein the world with chandeliers, beautiful woods, exquisite views; they added small conference capabilities with an amazing great room and a meeting room that would impress the most discerning industry magnates (and can be used at any time by guests as an office away from home).

They decided the lovely pool which was the centerpiece of the property was not big enough for swimming laps so they built an Olympic sized pool nearby. On one of their trips abroad, they came across a lovely chapel that was over 400 years old and decided to give it a new home – at Cal-a-Vie.  They had it painstakingly dismantled and shipped over and it was placed on a pinnacle point that has a stunning view. It is perfect for meditation classes, yoga and evening musical performances. John also mentioned that they have been amazed at how many people use it during their stay as simply a place for private reflection.

calaviechapel Cal a Vie Spa Guests Refrain, Lucky MeAfter placing the Chapel, they realized it was ideal for weddings and recommitment ceremonies but felt it would need an adjacent ballroom and kitchen. So they built a magnificent building they call L’Orangerie with antique walls from a French castle, and a new kitchen which was designed to also serve as a place to film and create TV shows with their star celebrity spa chef, Jason Graham. An antique wishing well and lovely windmill later, everything was perfect for a variety of gatherings – a recent one that even included a former President.

When the golf course next to their property went on the market, they decided to buy it so that their spa’s peace and quiet would forever be preserved. And just recently they decided to plant a vineyard which will not only eventually produce some Cal-a-Vie wine, but in the mean time provides an attractive hillside view .

While we toured the property, we couldn’t help but notice some construction so we inquired, “What’s next?” Well, they are adding a hydrotherapy aquatic center and a two story building to create a larger Morning Room. There will eventually be a new kitchen and in the works near the front of the property – a large retail store – for antiques. Wow! They have truly created a haven (pun intended) to accommodate their growing list of regular clientele which often includes celebrities and others who want a safe place to get away, recharge and reenergize.

How to sum it up? I do believe that Cal-a-Vie has set a new standard. The Havens seem to be motivated by their passion for this place and the transformation it provides more than any kind of financial return – at least in the short term. Those who are fortunate (and smart) enough to join them on this adventure must surely experience that “lucky me” feeling you get when you put one dollar in the candy machine and get two dollars worth of candy back.  Sign me up.

Mandarin Oriental’s New Spa Treatment and Product – Nuances that Count

mandarin.oriental 742690 Mandarin Orientals New Spa Treatment and Product Nuances that CountMandarin Oriental Spa’s New Spa Treatment and Product – Nuances that Count
by Susie Ellis, SpaFinder Insider

Andrew Gibson, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s group director of spa asked me to try their new Signature Massage and product line as soon as it became available (this June). So I scheduled an appointment for the first Saturday in June, knowing that once the Global Spa Summit was over, it would be the perfect treat. Andrew wouldn’t tell me anything about it ahead of time, so I decided just to go with the flow.

Having not been to the New York Mandarin Oriental since shortly after it opened in 2003, I was amazed at how the décor and menu still felt very upscale and current – a credit to the fact that they were ahead of the times when they opened. There were a few signs of wear (such as the sign in the Jacuzzi area) but the facility is still very pristine and I even noticed a few embellishments like additional lighting around the mirrors. The service seemed top notch – very clean, picked up, smiling attendants, etc. Of course, the stunning vistas of New York City and Central Park that can be seen from almost all of their rooms (and it was a beautiful sunny day) is never out of style.

While looking forward to the new signature treatment, I was hoping that some of the really special things about Mandarin Oriental spas would still be in place. Thankfully they were. There was the customary exchange of shoes for slippers upon entry, the welcome tea which was better tasting than I remember, time rituals (blocks of time with a very well trained therapist in lieu of booking a specific treatment), and the welcome foot bath ritual. That foot ritual is nice for everyone (therapist included) as clean feet are important, but of even greater importance in my view is the opportunity it gives for the therapist and client to converse in effort to find out what the best plan of treatment would be for the client that day.

MO.NY.Suite 795040 Mandarin Orientals New Spa Treatment and Product Nuances that CountI completed an extensive questionnaire with some yin yang questions to indicate which of the TCM Oriental principles of five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) would be the one for us to work on today. Terms such as Flourish, Bloom, Awaken, Reflect and Release were used. Later I found that the questions helped pinpoint which of the five elements would correspond to a specific essential oil to be used in my treatment.

My therapist, Jim, was absolutely tops (do ask for him by name if you want to be assured of a superb treatment.) A chakra “test” of sorts on my back was next which helped to verify which treatment and essential oil to use. What most people don’t realize (and I think they could make a bigger deal of this) is that getting a massage with expensive essential oil is a real treat. Not only does it feel good and smell good, but there is no after-massage itchiness and it benefits the skin to leave it on.

The 100 minute treatment was superb. At the end Jim finished off by giving me a sheet of paper which had information about “Awaken,” an essential oil corresponding to the wood element we were working on that day. It had a list of symptoms when this element is out of balance, some healing foods to consider and foods to avoid. He then ended the session showing me a Qigong exercise that would be good for strengthening this wood element for my liver and gallbladder meridians.

When I checked out of the spa I was given a lovely bag with a gift. It was a collection of the Elemental Bath and Shower Oils for the various Oriental elements set in a tasteful and gorgeous box. Not sure if they include the gift for everyone…it certainly was nice.

Bottom line…just as Mandarin Oriental introduced time rituals over six years ago, look for their new protocol that includes various testing and bespoke treatments with a new product and take home protocol that extends the treatment experience to become a new standard. It is more than the sum of its parts – I found myself looking forward to using one of the oils from my “goodbye gift” a few days later.

Roosevelt Baths and Spa Boost “Sanus Per Aquam”

little spa theater 714489 Roosevelt Baths and Spa Boost Sanus Per AquamDriving back to the city from the NYSPA meeting at The Sagamore, we were accompanied by Ingo Schweder (Corporate Spa Director, Mandarin Oriental ) and his delightful fiancé. We stopped at the Roosevelt baths in Saratoga Springs right next to the Gideon Putnam resort, which were remodeled into a beautiful spa just a few years ago. We were impressed with how the spa management maintained the original feel of “taking the waters” in this area, yet were still able to incorporate the services and products of a truly outstanding spa. I guess we aren’t alone; over the weekend the spa, which has 42 treatment rooms, was totally sold out!

And just in case we were wondering whether all the water in those baths is really mineral rich, each of us was treated to a glass of natural mineral water directly from the spring. Ugh, be forewarned – you’ll want to think “tiny sip.” But it did drive home the point that bathing in these waters is different than sitting in tapwater at home. Therapeutic benefits? Well, it certainly seems like a possibility.
