I love it when events really work. And last night’s Ice Cream Social Networking Social here at the SpaFinder offices was one of those that I think hit the right tone. We always host a get-together the night before ISPA’s New York media event, since so many from the spa industry are in town.

Each year we do something different to keep things fresh and focused on what’s cutting edge. This year we felt that social media was a big part of the buzz and also that everyone was ready for a bit of lighthearted fun. So we put the two together and did an Ice Cream Social with social networking component. Our guests had the opportunity to have a quick personal intro to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and SpaBooker. Some people signed up and sent their first tweet, others had fun viewing themselves on YouTube since we took a quick video of them with a FlipVideo when they entered the party, etc.

There were chocolate martinis, ice cream cones, M&M;’s… well, you get the picture. And yes, there were a few healthy choices if you wanted to stick with carob covered pretzels and fresh strawberry popsicles. (I did not.)

What I learned from the evening (other than it was fun to mix the socials) is that everyone is either talking about social media, experimenting with certain sites, or trying to get a balance between being overwhelmed and sitting on the sidelines. Seems like finding time to learn and keep up a social media site is a shared challenge for all of us, and no one out there (and I do mean no one anywhere) is really an expert all the way around. Learning from each other is probably the way to go – and with a chocolate martini in hand, well, it’s a little less frustrating and a bit more fun.

A New Spa Brand is Born: Nectar at Sheraton

A New Spa Brand is Born: Nectar at Sheraton
Susie Ellis, SpaFinder Insider
One of our spa trend predictions for 2009 was “Brands, brands, brands.” The recent announcement that Sheraton is adding a spa brand called Nectar (created by Spatality) is a perfect example of this trend. And I must say it seems timely – a mid-priced hotel brand adding a cool spa. How do I know that Nectar will be cool? Because Richard Dusseau and his team at Spatality designed it! spatality 784684 A New Spa Brand is Born: Nectar at Sheraton
Richard (pictured on the left with his partners Elaine Fenard and Ingo Schweder) showed me some of the early drawings of the Nectar brand a few years ago. It was immediately obvious to me that this was going to be a winner. It had great design and yet was created to be efficient for the consumer and the operator which would keep costs down. He cleverly designed the sauna and steam together in a unique way and the colors he used to bring the brand to life – well, I thought I was seeing the spa of the future. Guess I was.
One of the recent press announcements about the new Nectar spa brand at Sheraton described it as “high design/low ego.” Who would have known all those years ago that this would be exactly what would resonate in today’s world?

Global Spa Summit – A Valuable Gathering

SundayW0160LOW 741400 Global Spa Summit A Valuable Gathering The Global Spa Summit was over late yesterday afternoon and the feedback has been great. With our sold out event of 150 delegates plus 50 spouses, we had a stellar international group of spa VIP’s. Milana, one of our Spa Finder VP’s, who was among the people who helped with logistics, just walked into my office and gave her take on the event saying, “it was spectacular.” And sitting among an array of flowers and thank you gifts, I am feeling warmed by the feeling that her sentiments seemed to be shared by many others. I look forward to sharing details and insights on my blog in the next week….there were amazing presentations, panels, and discussions. Just now I am a bit exhausted…and it is my birthday so am heading home. Peter and I are just going to order in some healthy food from a favorite Thai restaurant, put up our feet and watch American Idol. After 3 days of the most marvelous Global Spa Summit I can’t think of anything I would rather do than just veg.

More later.

Spa Lifestyle Living is Becoming a Reality

miraval 704700 Spa Lifestyle Living is Becoming a Reality It’s been a busy Easter week and I have not been blogging as much as usual. My apologies – I am planning to get back on track! Before leaving for a few days of family gatherings in Palm Desert, Peter and I had a chance to revisit Miraval Living in New York to see the progress.

It was heartening to see the additional new model designed by Clodagh and it was a pleasure to meet Neil Furman, who has just been hired to be the facility’s program director. The fitness and spa area, the large pool, and the spa cafe are all under construction so it will be interesting to watch how they all develop.

Another spa living community, Canyon Ranch Living, will be opening this summer in Miami and so the idea of Spa Lifestyle Living is truly coming alive. This should be a big year of buzz for this concept.

“Spa Industry” to Become “Spa Community”

I am in LJimRoot 793158 Spa Industry to Become Spa Communityas Vegas at the ISPA (International Spa Association) conference. I always enjoy
catching up with colleagues and checking out the trade show floor. This year, there are 3,000 attendees. I remember when the conference had just a few hundred. The industry has really grown. The conferences keep getting better – and this one may have been one of the stronger ones.

Jim Root (left) is going to be the next chairman of ISPA, and he shared that his first order of business is going to be changing the commonly used term “spa industry” to “spa community”. That has a nice feel to it. And the timing might just be perfect.

It is interesting to reflect on the growth of ISPA and how each of its leaders has contributed to the organization. I have been involved with ISPA almost from the very beginning (1991), and I feel that each of its chairpersons has left their imprint on the organization – and that, in turn, has affected the entire industry. I am sure that every ISPA member would have their own interpretation, but this is how I remember each of their contributions:

Werner Mendel – let’s get things started
John Korpi – let’s think bigger
Alex Szekely – let’s live the vision and think long-term
Jerry Katzoff – let’s make this profitable
Jane Segerberg – let’s get more professionally organized
Thad Hyland – let’s get our priorities in line
Gayle Brady – let’s run this like a business
Jeff Kohl – let’s set accounting standards
Kate Mearns – let’s listen to our members
Jim Root – let’s become more of a community

Each leader’s contributions were important and, in retrospect, might have been exactly what was needed at the time. “From industry to community” might be a very spa-like way toward greater health.
