Spas: Pay Attention to the New Book “The End of Overeating

If you could see the book shelf in my office (and a list of all the books I have read in the past three decades) you might be surprised to see how many of those books have been about weight loss. Not only has this topic been part of my studies and lifelong career, (I wrote a research paper comparing children’s weight with IQ my first year in college), but I have also had my own experience with overeating issues. For several years of my life I was an “exercise bulimic” who ran marathons to support my habit of overeating which was the true goal of all that training. I mention this because it will help you put the following statement in context:

“I just finished what I think is the most important book on weight loss that I have ever read!”

Dr. David A. Kessler’s new book, The End of Overeating is currently #5 on the New York Times best seller list. (My prediction is that it will remain on that list for a good long time – at least I hope so!) endofovereating 791557 Spas:  Pay Attention to the New Book The End of Overeating

This book really resonated with me. I can tell by all the underlining I did while reading it. Every page. Multiple times. Crazy! That’s because I kept turning the pages and saying…wow, that’s incredible. Wow…I didn’t know that. Wow…this is hysterical. Wow, this just makes me want to cry.

I am going to have to devote two blog posts to this book to share with you some of the pearls of wisdom I found within. It is my fervent hope that I can convince those who are interested in the topic of weight loss (and that is most of us) to buy the book or download it on Kindle ($9.99). Not only do I think that it has an important personal message for all of us, but I think the spa industry in particular can be seen in an entirely new light as a result. After all, spas – especially destination spas – are one of the few places left on the planet where solutions to the dilemma Dr. Kessler outlines can be achieved.

Here are a few tidbits to give you a sense of where this is going.

  • “hyperpalatable” (ideal combinations of sugar, fat and salt) foods are actually “altering the biological circuitry of our brains”
  • “where traditional cuisine is meant to satisfy, American industrial food is meant to stimulate.”
  • “Intentionally or not, industry activities take advantage of the biology of the brain, selling us products that alter our bodies.”
  • “the excitement in the brain generated by these multi-modal stimuli increases our desire for further stimulation.”
  • “the goal is to get you hooked” (craveability)

And in Dr. Kessler’s words:

“millions of people …don’t have any of the eating disorders we’ve learned to recognize and treat, but food is never far from their minds. And once they begin eating, they can’t seem to stop. Long after they’ve ceased to feel hungry, they’re still eating. No one has ever explained what’s happening to them and how they can control their eating. That’s my goal in this book.”

“…the struggle to resist certain foods isn’t unique to people who are overweight or obese–people who maintain a healthy weight also face this challenge. How can something as simple as a chocolate chip cookie hold such power over so many of us? I had to go inside the food industry and understand the workings of our brains to comprehend the essence of this struggle. The food industry designs foods to be powerful stimuli. And what is served in many restaurants is nothing more than FAT on FAT on FAT loaded with sugar and salt.”

“I wanted the answer to what would appear to be a simple question: why is it so difficult to control what and how much we eat? What I learned was that our brain circuits become rewired by certain foods, so that we end up wanting and eating more than we need. Naturally, my next question became: how can we alter our response to food? In more technical language, how can we make the needed “critical perceptual shift” that fundamentally changes the way we view food?”

I am behind on my blogging, with several topics piling up. I think it is the same problem everyone is facing…lots to do, limited time and feeling extra pressure because of the current focus on economic challenges. So I thought I would try something new: A short recap of four topics (that could each be their own blog) and my “bottom line” observations for each.

Canyon Ranch Living: Visited this new spa lifestyle real estate project that just opened in Miami. I was impressed with the size, style, and staff. It was more than I expected, with the full Canyon Ranch program integrated into this new setting. There are two towers where you can buy residences and one tower that is like a hotel. One of the towers is almost “sold out” and the other is around 25% sold I was told. Bottom Line: I like the concept very much. It just needs one thing – time. Time to increase occupancy and time for people to truly “get it” about this new living option.

Marketing CampaignLiquidrom: While in Berlin, Nicholas, my stepson, and I went to the famous Liquidrom where you float in a darkened space in warm salt water with music you can hear underwater. There are saunas, steams, cold foot baths, an outdoor Jacuzzi, a bar with fresh fruit, smoothies and snacks, and a few massage rooms. I literally fell asleep in the floating pool propped up by floating noodles. Our massages were excellent. (German therapists are highly trained.) Bottom Line: We both liked our experience. This seems to be a very successful business model similar to others I have blogged about including Centre Parc in the UK; Castle Spa, the Korean fun house in Queens; and Glen Ivy Hot Springs in CA. These places present hydro and thermal experiences as the primary focus and make good money by having volume attendance. They also provide a valuable wellness experience. 500 – 1000 people per day pencils out, even if few take treatments.

NY Times Article, “An Expression of Doubt About Facials”:
The same old saw: Doctors saying that facials are overpriced and spa therapists quoted as saying something that doesn’t sound very intelligent. And then a side bar talking about what dermatologists consider valuable. (They mentioned exfoliation, microdermabraion, peels and extractions – the very things aestheticians at spas do!) Three things need to change in my opinion: 1) Aestheticians and spa professionals need to become more educated about terminology and research. They need to become more confident about the value of what they do. 2) Doctors would be well served to think of spa professionals as partners instead of adversaries. Spas do a lot to help people relax and de-stress, exercise, eat more healthfully, take care of their skin, wear sunscreen, etc. In fact, spas are places providing the very behavioral change doctors recommend to their clients. 3) Media would do well to realize that doctors have an invested interest in criticizing spa professionals, as many feel that spas might take away from their dermatology business. Bottom Line: Spas and medical practices are both important. Neither needs to discount the other and the media would be better served to take a more knowledgeable position these days. The consumer is way ahead of this old story.

“I need a spa:” This is a phrase we seem to be hearing (and saying) more often. In fact, Steve Kane, our Senior VP of Gift Sales, suggested we look at this phrase for our next marketing campaign and spread it out to our entire network of spas. He was inspired by what had happened to him that morning. A woman he knows was in a mad dash to make the train he takes into the city daily. Huffing and puffing she ran by him saying, “Boy, I need a spa.” Bottom Line: That pretty much says it all.

I felt really ‘out of it.’ Sitting at lunch with my niece Christa (17), my brother Rolf (49), his girlfriend Stacey (40), my step-daughter Courtney (30), and her girlfriend, Tana (28ish). They are all talking about the Wii and in particular the Wii Fit and how much they love, love, love it! It’s fun, they get a great workout, use it all the time, etc.

Well, this is something new. All of these people – guys, gals, at various ages all LIKING exercise? And the same program? I decided that I needed to find out more – and get ‘with it’.

wii fit 754755 Wii Shoulder Treatment on Spa Menus to join Blackberry Thumb Massage at Spas?I have been hearing about the Wii for a while but have never experienced it and didn’t even know there was a Wii Fit. So I asked my brother (who is visiting from Austin) to buy me a Wii while he was out sightseeing and shopping in New York. I learned long ago that if you are going to be in the Internet business, you really do have to keep up with what is going on. Thus, earlier in the year I bought the Kindle (a wireless reading device), Peter got the I-Phone (phone, I-pod, Internet), and I realize we are a bit late to the Wii.

Apparently Wii’s are hard to get – sold out at most places. But they were able to find one at Toys R Us – although there were no Wii Fits anywhere.

My 17-year-old niece installed it on my living room TV at my apartment (in about three minutes) and we got started. Basically there was a six-inch long sensor that she put on top of my TV which is connected to the Wii and another cord which is plugged into the TV. We started with tennis. The person or persons playing, each hold a remote in their hands which simulates a tennis racket. Play begins. Very realistic…and I found out I was as bad at tennis with the Wii as I am on the courts. And my usual problem of hitting the ball too late seems to have transferred. Later we tried bowling, then golf.

Seems like a cross between a video game and sports. And I have to agree, it was amazing. It was fun (social) and I could imagine how you would improve your game and that a fitness version could engage you in exercise. Bottom line is that I am not sure everyone needs to own one…but learning about and experiencing the technology does open your eyes to new possibilities.

Finally, I learned that my niece has ‘Wii Shoulder’ which apparently is a stress injury from playing the game too much.

And so I wonder…will ‘Wii Shoulder Treatment’ start appearing on spa menus like ‘Blackberry Thumb Massage’?

Alas…I suppose so.

Spa Fusion in Action

elijahwebcommunication 723487 Spa Fusion in ActionBob Henry, award-winning architect and author of Spa: The Sensuous Experience (and personal friend), recommended a bodyworker named Gary Wohlman a few months ago. Since Bob is “in the know,” I decided to give Gary a try.

My session with Gary last night began with his specialized form of Deep Tissue Body Sculpting, which he described as having three parts: Creative Release, Emotional Release, and Physical Release. According to Gary, these steps respectively represent the concepts of “fine tuning,” “retraining the patterns,” and “freeing the stress.”

What a great example of the Spa Fusion Trend we predicted as one of our Top Ten Spa Trends for 2007. Gary has fused massage, breath work, and verbal affirmations. While he did the deep massage and affirmations, I did the breath work; we continued this pattern throughout the entire hourlong session.

Results? Well, I can’t say I love having to take such an active role by breathing a certain way with every stroke, visualizing the sun rising, water flowing, anxiety releasing, etc., when I would rather lie there like a blob and nod off. However, I have to say that not only did I feel as though I could perform ballet after the session, but I also slept well and felt more energetic this morning than I have in a long time.
