“We are all in possession of a real miracle.” –Deborah Szekely, Owner, Rancho La Puerta
Magic. That’s how I would describe what happens at the Ranch. Maybe it’s the majestic setting, (as Mount Kuchumaa is said to have magical powers), the talented and attentive staff, exceptional culinary efforts, and fitness and wellness classes any buff would fawn over.
There’s a magnet down in Tecate. It draws in crowds from all over the world that use the Ranch as a touchstone, a place to relax, to get inspired, or simply to find what makes them happy. I had the wonderful opportunity of spending a week at the Ranch and my own experience was nothing short of inspirational.
I met so many great people, some of which had been back 30+ times! Mothers and daughters, old college friends on their annual pilgrimage, newlyweds, and even individuals in search of some solitude gathered at the hidden gem just south of San Diego. The ranch caters to every journey and that’s why people love it so much. Everyone is doing their best to live their healthiest lives in their own way. And they gravitate to the Ranch to share their wellness pursuits with other likeminded people. There is such a sense of community you feel just by crossing the threshold, which is no doubt, what draws the crowds back year after year.
If you are a fitness fanatic or a wellness newbie, the Ranch has over 100 classes a week to choose from. Looking to get your heart pumping, get in a good stretch, or calm your monkey mind? There is really something special for everyone.
And that something special for me was a tour of the ranch’s farm. Over 80 percent of Rancho La Puerta’s meals are created from the organic garden right on the property. Salvador, head of the farm, is one of the most inspiring foodies I’ve ever met. I’ve never seen anyone so excited to show off ten different types of basil or speak so animatedly about herbs and their medicinal benefits. His love for farming and nutrition is palpable in every syllable that leaves his mouth. His main job is to keep the soil nourished so the farm continues to yield the most rich, organic produce. Nourished soil leads to nourished plants, which, in turn, leads to nourished visitors who are radiant, from head to toe.
Looking for proof that the ranch’s methodology is an effective one? Look no further than Rancho La Puerta owner, Deborah Szekely. At ninety-one years old, she is more animated, dexterous, and agile than most thirty-year-olds. Sharp in mind and body, she eagerly shared her secrets with the group. “Three meals a day,” she declared, as she doesn’t believe in snacking. And these three meals consist mostly of vegetables and fruits, with small amounts of fish. And a balanced lifestyle that is equal parts work, wellness, and pleasure. “It’s simple,” she grinned.
Or maybe it really is just a magic mountain.
