It’s no secret gel manicures can wreak havoc on our nails – namely because many of us don’t have the patience to abstain from picking it off once its time to head back to the spa to get the gels removed! However did you know that they can possibly lead to melanoma? In a study released by the American Academy for Dermatology, using information from Chris Adigun, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at The Ronald O. Perelman Department of Dermatology at New York University School of Medicine in New York, N.Y, it was shown that “women who frequently get gel manicures should consider their skin cancer risk becaause the UV light needed to cure the gel manicure is a risk factor for skin cancer. In addition, photo damage from UV lamps could result in cosmetic changes to the exposed surrounding skin.” Plus, “nails continually covered with polish obscure any problems occurring under the nail, such as an infection or tumor, and could delay diagnosis and treatment.”
Scary stuff! But outside of the prolonged possible risk of cancer – a more immediate issue are the dry, brittle nails we’re left with for weeks following the end of our gels. “In one study, five women who had reported nail weakness, brittleness, and thinning from gel manicures were examined by dermatologists, who attributed these symptoms to the gel manicures. In addition, one woman underwent ultrasound and reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) measurements of the nail plate before and after one gel manicure, which showed thinning of the nail plate.”
Due to the increase in women getting gels, there’s been a demand for products that can be used to restore nails and allow them to grow healthy and strong! Dermelect Cosmecueticals launched the first ever peptide-infused anti-aging nail and hand treatment using ProSina™ which is aimed at strengthening and improving the condition of damaged nails and skin. We took the Nail Recovery System (and the ME Anti-Aging Color Treatments) for a spin and we can say 100 percent the line satisfies our current craving for healthy nails!
