The winter weather wreaks havoc on our skin – from the record low temps, the wind chill, going in and out of artificial heated cars and offices, and the often inevitable cold sweat (sad, but true) – our skin is basically screaming for relief. Here are some of our favorite products to soothe winter skin and stay hydrated, refreshed, and radiant straight through springtime!
Healthy skin starts on the inside and I love USANA Health Sciences’ BiOmega fish oil supplements to get a daily boost of 2000mg of omega-3 fatty acids and 200 IU of Vitamin D. This helps to tone skin by giving my body the nutrients it needs without that dreaded fishy taste since the company formulates this power packed gel capsules with a little lemon oil.
Other added benefits: healthy bones and joints, improved memory (thanks to the DHA!), and cardiovascular health.
I used to swear by a very popular facial cleansing device however during the colder months my skin can be super sensitive and I found that the bristles could leave my skin irritated – enter the Luna by Foreo. This little pink device has changed the way I wash my skin.
The gentle silicone “touch-points” are 100% waterproof and nonporous so it’s much more hygienic than brushes that can collect dirt, makeup, and left over cleanser. Morning and night you simply wet your face and apply your favorite cleanser as usual, then wet the LUNA and glide it across your face. Once the cleansing is over the fun part begins! Apply the reverse the surface of the LUNA to fine lines and wrinkle-prone skin, this is the lower-frequency Anti-Aging Mode! The LUNA’s T-Sonic™ (trans-dermal sonic) pulses help to rejuvenate you skin, remove dead skin cells, remove dirt and makeup effectively, and improves the absorption of your favorite skin care products so you can really reap the rewards! In just a few weeks you’ll see a dramatic improvement in your skin.
Never underestimate the power of a good body wash + lotion duo for keeping the skin that’s not on your face hydrated all winter long (if you’re anything like me this is the skin that tends to suffer the worst!).
I love this Mediterranean Duo from Phytoceane – the shower cream is super rich and contains amazing and soothing Mediterranean ingredients including Jania Rubens, Olive Oil Extract, and, Seawater Concentrate and the body cream is my current favorite fresh scent! The body cream is light yet effective so I feel moisturized without feeling sticky, it uses much of the same ingredients as the shower cream but adds Fig Plant Milk and Sweet Almond Oil to truly nourish skin.
Kiss dry skin and toxins goodbye with a dry skin brush. Your skin eliminates toxins from the body; when the skin isn’t clear (from dirt, products, dead skin cells) it’s unable to adequately release these toxins. Dry brushing is a one-two punch for exfoliating the skin while simultaneously improving overall health. Daily dry skin brushing can improve skin tone, help reduce cellulite and boost overall cell renewal. Once a day is all it takes for smooth, radiant skin!
They range in price so you can find one that fits your budget but I always like to recommend the one I use, the skin brush by ESPA because it uses natural bristles from Mexican cactus plants.
After cleansing and toning my skin with my LUNA by Foreo in the AM (currently with Amala’s Rejuvenating Cleansing Milk and Toner) I always reach for Kate Somerville’s Quench Hydrating Face Serum as a primer to my foundation. The HSC Complex infuses my skin with serious moisture, the Vitamin A helps to prevent fine lines and wrinkles, and the lipids work to keep my skin looking young and firm. I love the dewy sheen it gives me – keeping my skin looking and feeling well… quenched!
Once a week (Sunday nights so I look refreshed on Monday) I love to indulge in a great face mask and the one I’m currently craving most is the Decleor Hydra Floral Ultra-Hydrating & Pluming Expert Mask. In just ten minutes this mask plumps, hydrates, and softens my skin and leaves my complexion radiant. As you massage the cream into your skin it turns into a thin oil and the hyaluronic acid immediately gets to work. After ten minutes I just remove the excess with a soft makeup pad and I’m good to glow!
We all know by now that we can’t skimp on the sunscreen just because the beach weather is behind us (or in front of us depending on how you choose to look at it!). I love products that work double-duty and the Eminence Tinted Moisturizer (I use the Vanilla Latte shade) may just pull triple duty. It has an SPF 25 so you’re covered on the sun safety front – it’s a tinted moisturizer so it hydrates and offers non-cakey coverage which is much needed in the winter – and it contains some intense skin benefiting ingredients including linden tea (to nourish), shea butter (to repair), aloe (to soothe), and more! Oh – and perhaps the best part is I’ve never had a foundation that actually smells good enough to eat, until now!
Cracked, chapped lips are often an inevitable of cold weather, but with Lip Rewind you can reverse the effects of cold weather AND aging! The M3 Complex helps to hydrate lips with pomegranate, shea butters, coconut oil, and hyaluronic microspheres (which help to minimize fine lines). The complex restores with advanced peptides and white rose extract to boost collagen and restore fullness, it enhances with menthol and peppermint oil to freshen breath, and it protects with SPF 20 and Vitamin E! Lip Rewind comes in 5 shades so you can heal and hydrate your lips at any occasion all winter long.
I’m a sucker for a good glow and the winter months are no exception. To keep my “tan” all year round I’ve always turned to Jergens Natural Glow and now that they’ve added firming ingredients and improved the smell I am loving it even more! It claims that in seven days you’ll start seeing results (aka less cellulite!) but I would say the firming starts after two weeks. I love that it gives a healthy, natural (and subtle) glow while hydrating skin.
If you have to be outside in chilly temps (especially when there’s wind) whether its for a quick run to the car or for a longer period of time your best skin defense is to cover up and bundle up! Gloves, something to cover your ears, and a scarf to cover your neck and your nose, mouth, and cheeks are all necessary cold weather items! Cover you face to keep your skin and lips from getting wind burnt, red, and irritated – for my brisk 20 minute walk from the bus to work I like to wrap my face with my soft cotton scarf. I also try to carry around a small hand moisturizer (bliss makes a wonderful travel sized one!) and apply it to my hands before putting my gloves on to keep my skin from cracking in the cold.
If wind burn does happen I like to reach for Naturopathica Aloe Replenishing Gel Mask – it heals wounds fast and its perfect for wind burns in the winter and sunburns in the summer (in the summer I keep my tube in the fridge to help cool the burn).
