Reiki at a Spa. Real Energy Medicine or Bunk?
by Susie Ellis

Reiki. I have always found it mysterious. What is it exactly? Every explanation I have heard seems to be different. I have tried it a few times, however when faced with a choice between a wonderfully relaxing deep-tissue massage or a Reiki session, I have always opted for the massage. In Reiki there isn't a lot of actual touch - and no massaging of muscles. In fact I have been suspicious of the possibility that a therapist likes to do Reiki because it isn't as much work - a way for them to "rest" during a treatment.

Well, I stand corrected. I couldn't have been more wrong about Reiki (or perhaps I should say about Reiki with a Reiki Master.) During my visit to the Trisara Resort & Spa they had arranged for me to have a session with this famous Reiki healer in Phuket.

Here is what I remember: The Reiki practitioner had a gentle and positive spirit. He explained ahead of time that we would begin with me on the massage table face up, and then later face down. I wouldn't necessarily feel anything, however many people have found that they feel an energy release afterward. For some it is more immediate, for others within the next day or two. Some people get emotional, others just have a greater sense of the body/mind/spirit being in balance.

So we began. After washing his hands and some mental preparation, he cupped his hands and began "hovering" over various parts of my body. I could feel an intense heat from his hands which he kept close to - but not directly on - my body. He seemed to be channeling energy from his body to mine. This kind of energy transmission happened continually as he went from one part of the body to another. Always, there was heat from his hands. The entire session was about 75 minutes and the longer it went on, the more pleasurable the feeling of energy transfer was.

That was it. The only "ah ha" moment during this time was a very bright flashlight-like strobe which I saw while my eyes were closed which startled me. I really don't know if I had fallen asleep and was dreaming or if some other phenomenon had occured.

Anyway, the practitioner bid me farewell after which I went right from the massage table to change and then head to the Phuket airport for my trip back to New York. As I began what would end up being a 24 hour journey home, I was aware of feeling a bit more relaxed than usual, a bit less anxious - in fact not anxious at all. And then it happened. A flood of tears during my layover at the Bangkok airport. The weeping lasted about two hours. Now I suppose it might have had something to do with the fact that my flight out of Phuket was delayed five hours and I missed my connection to New York and had to rearrange everything through Tokyo, etc. However, I am a seasoned traveler and have faced these sort of travel irritations many times and never have they resulted in an uncontrollable flood of tears. Something had truly shifted.

It seems time for me to learn more about Reiki and energy medicine. Please share with me whatever experience you may have had. You have my attention.

Dear Susie,
I read with interest your recent article about your experience with a Reiki Master in Thailand and wanted to share a personal experience I had some years ago after becoming a Reiki Master in 2001. This experience particularly confirmed the amazing power of Reiki.

My mother had had two heart surgeries in 2003. After her first surgery she went into cardiac arrest because one of her by-passes had come loose. I was at her bedside when this happened and watched her collapse before my eyes. I remember being taken to a waiting room while the doctors tried to resusitate her. She apparently had been bleeding into her chest and there was no blood to pump to her brain. The doctors told me there wasn’t much hope for her survival and if she did survive it would be in a vegetative state. While my mother was in surgery I was praying for her and sending her Reiki. As I was doing this my body was shaking at times uncontrollably. The ICU nurse came out to see me twice during a half hour period. Both times she looked at me and said ‘whatever you are doing, keep on doing it’. These were the only words relayed to me during this time. My mother somehow survived without brain damage and made a full recovery very quickly. The hospital had considered her recovery to be a miracle and many doctors came to visit her and see for themselves how she had come through.
She is still here and as sharp as ever at 77. I am so thankful for the gift of Reiki and am certain that she would not be where she is had it not been for intervention of this healing energy.
For 18 years I have been a garden designer along with practicing Reiki and learning other forms of energy healing. My intention now is to focus more of my time to this beautiful healing art.

In 1978, I was working on a client who was suffering from a migraine headache he had for more than 2 weeks. He had been prone to headaches for many years, but nothing the doctors could do would relieved his symptoms. One day, he requested that I see him because he had heard I had " healing hands". I explained to him that I was an aesthetician, not a massage therapist, but he didn't care, so I took on the challenge to help him. I worked on him for about an hour, massaging his neck, face and head. Amazingly to me, he left without his headache. The only problem was...HE GAVE IT TO ME!! Needless-to-say, I was shocked!

It was that experience that led me to go to a Reiki Master by the name of John Gray, who was one of the first to bring this treatment to the states. He explained to me why that happened, and how to protect myself during my sessions with clients. I have been in business for 32 years now, and although I can still "feel" my clients energy, I know not to "own" it. I am just a "tool" to help work it out for them.

Thank you so much for sharing this information with us. In this profession, we are all "healers"...and we truly need to understand more about energy and how important it is to protect ourselves, as well as our cherished clients.

Keep up the good work!! You're a blessing to us all.

Greetings,
I was very interested to read about Susie's Reiki experience in Thailand. I am a Reiki Master living in Victoria, B.C. and have experienced many interesting shifts and phenomena while giving and receiving Reiki. It is an intelligent force which seems to know where to go for healing on whatever level is needed at the time for each person. I'm very encouraged to see that Reiki is being looked at here in SpaFinder as a valuable therapy and an incredible adjunct to any spa treatment. I would love to know of spas that are looking for Reiki Masters where they could offer their services and if you have knowledge of this could you let me know who I could contact. Much appreciation.

Wow. This sounds amazing. But did the tears feel “productive” or frustrating? Sad or happy? I’ve only had Reiki once and I, too, was not sure what the heck it was supposed to be doing to me.

good question...I would say "productive" tears. Not happy, more on the sad side, however probably more of a "release" than sadness.

Thanks for asking about the tears...it is kind of a good way to explain that this did indeed seem to be a positive experience.
