A Day Spa Visit to Massage Envy

A Day Spa Visit to Massage Envy
by Susie Ellis

Well, I gave it a try. I went to Massage Envy while here in Palm Desert, California, for the $39 massage. Such a bargain price! And that is what has made the Massage Envy franchise so popular with franchisees (there are now over 700!) and customers!

I love the idea of an affordable massage and their no-frills approach is appealing. The waiting room and massage rooms were very nice and when I arrived at 7:00 p.m. this evening, there were quite a few customers.

However…on a scale of 1-10, my massage was a 1. Oh dear. I have to say it was probably the worst massage I have ever had. The therapist had only worked there two weeks (most likely right out of massage school) and clearly was not cut out for massage. He was nice enough, but the touch was so tentative and very disorganized in terms of flow. If I hadn’t asked five minutes before the massage was over, he wouldn’t have even massaged my legs. He was planning on only doing my back and arms.

When I checked out, I paid my $39 and no one even mentioned their “Membership Program” which is what the clinic owners most likely want to push.

I haven’t given up however, because I refuse to believe that I could have such a bad massage again if I tried someone else. But for now I have to say that my verdict is, “You get what you pay for.”

Dear Susie,

I just wanted to mention that at times I have the luxury of receiving a massage at home. My therapist mentioned that she goes to Massage Masters in Sherman Oaks, CA which is an affordable spa in the SpaFinder program (not $39 but $76 for an hour). She referred to the person she sees there as a "therapist's' therapist" - but did note that it's good to ask how long the therapist has been with the spa and/or who is most popular.

Thanks Betsy - I am so glad to hear that your therapist has good experiences at Massage Envy in Sherman Oaks. I think therapists need a place to go for their body work and this is a great affordable option. And as I mentioned, I can't imagine that my one poor massage experience represents all Spa Envy clinics. I did want to experience what someone who wouldn't know the "tricks of the trade" would...thus didn't ask for the most seasoned thereapist. However it's a good idea to share that advice with others because it sometimes does help!

Wow thank you so much for writing a story on this spa. What a great deal! I was wondering if you have heard anything about Spa Luce? It is opening at the Renaissance Hollywood hotel next month. Maybe you can check it out and write something about it. Just to help you out a bit I heard that if you sign up for the mailing list at spaluce.com, you get discounts and perks. I look forward to reading what you have to say about it. :)

We are an affordable day spa with licensed professional massage therapists, skin care therapists and nail technicians. Our therapists are some of the best in HB, CA and we constantly get converts from Massage Envy. Our therapists are paid and treated well by management. This passes to the clients and as a result the clients return to us. Karma....It is that simple.
